Not only will Partnership 4 Kids students explore the wide range of possible career opportunities that exist locally, but they will also get a taste of higher education from current Goodrich Scholars who will serve as the students’ personal guides and advisors for the duration of the career fair. In addition, P4K has matched approximately 30 UNO college juniors and seniors with incoming P4K freshmen to serve as peer mentors. These volunteer opportunities include professional development/training, stipends and coaching/mentor support from P4K staff. | ||

Students from the UNO Center for Urban Sustainability participated in the event. Approximately 69 UNO and UNL students and boy scouts volunteered that day. Surrounding neighborhood residents participated also. We received much media coverage. The Newman Center garden and raised beds event had an estimated 25-30 Newman Center students participating in the planting of shrubs and perennials. | ||

He created a model for measuring cost-effectiveness for EAB as related to Ash trees. Jim Grener presented us with a business assessment financial analysis templet model for cost for EAB ash tree management. This templet served as a financial analysis that would be used to help donors understand the cost of replacement and what their funds would pay for. Our organization evaluated 13 presentations and served on the panel to assess student performance and outcome. This was a large part of the final student grade. | ||

This event will take place Wednesday, April 17 from 10 A.M. - 1 P.M. inside the Community Engagement Center, rooms 201/205/209. A pizza lunch will also be provided during this time. Let’s overcrowd the prison with our favorite books! Please bring your favorite book to the symposium to donate to the Omaha Correctional Center. They need copies of fiction, poetry, and some nonfiction for their library. Panel 1: Writing Corrections Nicholas Bell and Tyrone Harper III of Writer’s Block, Carmala Aderman of Hero’s Journey, and Steve Langan and Alana Alexander of Programming Life 101 will discuss the creative writing that occurs within and beyond spaces of confinement. Panel 2: Education and Re-entry Diane Good-Collins and formerly incarcerated individuals who are transitioning from correctional facilities will discuss some of the educational opportunities offered by the Metropolitan Community College’s 180 Re-Entry program. Keynote Speaker: Dominique Morgan Dominique Morgan is the national director of Black and Pink, the largest prison abolitionist organization in the United States. Partnering his lived experience of incarceration as a youth (which included 18 months in solitary confinement), and a decade of change making advocacy and background in public health, Dominique continues to work in spaces of sex education, radical self-care, and youth development with intentions of dismantling the prison industrial complex and the impact it has on our community. The Nebraska Prison Post-Secondary Education Project was created with the belief that education is one solution to America's prison problem. This program was developed in Fall 2017 through private funding to create a partnership between the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) and the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). The primary purpose of this project is to offer UNO courses, taught by UNO professors, lecturers and instructors, within OCC. | ||

The four day courses will take place August 13 - 16, 2019. The workshops are designed for parents of young children ages 2 - 10 years old with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Each child will receive a 2-hour "hands on" session on days 2 or 3. The following areas will be addressed: How to implement the PRT motivational components Expanding the functions of communication through question-asking Understanding Fidelity of Implementation Improving socialization in children with ASD Procedures for decreasing disruptive or problem behaviors. Becky Haddix, outreach specialist for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, was organizing an after-school public service project at an area park for a group of Girl Scouts. But after talking with the Nebraska Watershed Network, Nebraskans for Civic Reform, and the Black Police Officers Association, the project became educational and social. Levi Carter Park, with its lake, was a built-in ecosystem and the perfect place for the Nebraska Watershed Network to give the girls an onsite science lesson. And with the Black Police Officers Association providing supplies for s’mores to break the ice, the event had the makings of a promising field trip. The girls learned things like water conservation, and were introduced to terms like the watershed, quality indexing, agrichemical runoff, and coliform. Partnering with the Black Police Officers Association provided an opportunity for the girls to form positive relationships with the officers. | ||

Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. For this project, UNO students will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors. UNO students will also attend the Blackburn culinary class a few times during the project to develop relationships with student partners. UNO students are expected to arrive at Adam’s Park no later than 11:30 am each Wednesday. Upon arrival, UNO students will set up supplies, help Blackburn students unload the food, serve drinks, and get to know the seniors. Throughout the meal, UNO students are able to interact with both Blackburn students and seniors. UNO students are also expected to visit Blackburn Alternative Program to create meaningful relationships with the Blackburn students. UNO students have the option of shadowing Blackburn’s social worker, Ms. Bonam. Over the semester, UNO students will work on a project identified by Adams Park Senior Center that supports the relationships, dignity, and worth of the participants of Adams Park Center. | ||

As a community partner, the Joslyn Art Museum worked with the Blackburn students to create podcasts focusing on the various art installments at the Joslyn. As part of the series, three of the films are directly co-sponsored by the UNO Women and Gender Studies program: 1) Tuesday, Sept. 12, will feature a sing-along of the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," which tells the story of a gender-fluid punk rocker from East Berlin. A post-film discussion will be lead by UNO sociology professor Jay Irwin. 2) Tuesday, Sept. 19, will feature "Pariah," the story of a Brooklyn teen who embraces her identity as a lesbian while navigating how her identity affects her relationship with family and friends. A post-film panel will feature a group of national scholars who will discuss queer and intersectional identities in film. 3) Tuesday, Sept. 26, will feature a screening of "The Watermelon Women," with director Cheryl Dunye. The film is a documentary about Dunye's experiences trying to uncover the history of a 1930s black actress known simply as "The Watermelon Woman" while experiencing and uncovering secrets in her own life. This P-16 service learning project highlighted environmental sustainability and Omaha’s efforts on plastic bag use. The students collaborated with Nebraska State Senator Wendy DeBoer to draft a bill to propose to the Nebraska Legislature. The bill is still being drafted by Northwest students. | ||
