Description : UNO Students from Casey Reisberg's CMST 1110 Fundamentals of Public Speaking courses will engage in the student philanthropy model of service learning, where course content and student learning is linked to charitable giving. Students select and research a community agency of their own interest, then develop and present a persuasive speech and call to action on behalf of the organization. This is a student led initiative, giving students a $1,000 grant to distribute to one community agency - the persuasive speech presentation with the best call to action.

Description : "Students will observe children attending the childcare center when their parents are participating in classes. The focus of the observation will be on development across areas such as cognition, language, physical, and social-emotional. Following the observation, the students will provide positive feedback notes to the childcare teacher and tips about the age range observed. Students will also work in teams to develop presentations for parents about child development for specific age ranges (e.g., preschoolers, school-age). The students will deliver the presentations at the Learning Community of North Omaha to groups of parents that register. " PSYC 9560/850 Traditional

Description : UNO Students from Kersten Borer SOWK 1500-001 course: Social Work and Civic Engagement work on a service-learning project. This project will build on the success of the “Portions” cookbook project that collected recipes from community members accessing the food pantry and turned them into a community cookbook by, and for, our community members. Now that we have this resource, we want to use it to educate the wider community about the various causes and consequences of hunger in Omaha, focusing specifically on the ways that food insecurity impacts and is influenced by the reality of our community residents everyday lives. Students determine what kind of information they need from the community and how to get that information, collect stories from community members accessing the food pantry at Together, and create a cookbook with recipes and stories around the way food brings us together.

Description : UNO students enrolled in Kersten Borer SOWK 1500-001: Social Work and Civic Engagement will research selected sites in ADL’s Walk Against Hate and interview community members who have a connection to the site. These interviews are recorded and turned into videos (Vidgrid) or podcasts that are played on the ADL website (adlplains.org). Students can also provide essays, artwork, or blurbs about their thoughts associated with the site. In addition, UNO students work alongside the Secondary Success Program (SSP) and Blackburn Art students to create pieces of art for a site or two in ADL’s Walk Against Hate. UNO students will meet with the SSP and Blackburn students to share about the interviews that will inspire the artwork.
