Service learning is a pedagogy that connects community service with academic course content and objectives. Service learning pedagogies have been carried out in chemistry at the college level. This is a multiple-case study embedded within a one-semester Honors College General Chemistry II seminar. Findings indicate that the students developed more specific knowledge and appreciation of the community and expressed their intention to continue volunteering to improve academic and scientific skills. Implications of this pedagogy for chemistry teaching and learning are discussed. | ||

A child reared in adversity experiences toxic stress, which affects brain architecture, behavior, current and future health, and readiness to learn. Of course, then, this subject is important to both of our organizations. It is important to (in words from the film) “weave the understanding†about adversity and resilience throughout our community so that it can make “wise choices†and move from reacting to problems to responding. Maverick|PR assisted in outreach and pitches to local news and school entities. The March screening had 76 individuals whose affiliation includes 36 entities in 14 different cities, three states, and two countries. Friends of Japan UNO students volunteer for two days to support the event and provide cultural experience for the community. The Fall 2021 collaboration displayed lanterns in the fall chrysanthemum display at Lauritzen Gardens. They are part of a collection of 24 stone lanterns that were formerly displayed in several gardens in the sister city, Shizuoka, Japan. Some are more than 75 years old and were gifted to the people of Omaha. Lanterns became part of Japanese architectural ornamentation about 1,400 years ago, where they first associated with Buddhist templates and pagodas. Cultural activities were also part of the festival including calligraphy, origami, samurai helmet making, chopstick game, traditional games and toys, tea tasting, Kyudo archery demonstrations, paper arts workshops, Japanese music and drummers, martial arts, and more. | ||
