Description :
Partnering with local government, advocates and clinics, students on this course had the opportunity to learn from community public health experts and support public health work in Xalapa, Mexico. The group was involved with health education, community forums and advocacy efforts. Public health concerns in this region are closely tied to poverty and social inequity. Students visited low-resource rural areas to learn creative ways in which local health educators practice public health as well as have hands-on training in community health and advocacy efforts. Students were immersed not only in the broader Mexican culture, but also spent time learning about the ancient pre-Hispanic traditions that still influence how health is understood and practiced.
