Description : The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies is pleased to announce that we are hosting the "Moshe Gershovich Memorial Symposium and Publication Workshop on Global North Africa and the Middle East" on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the UNO Community Engagement Center. This symposium will honor the memory of the late Dr. Moshe Gershovich (1959 -2017) by hosting scholars from around the world who, like Moshe, are experts on Global North Africa and the Middle East. Dr. Moshe Gershovich, who was a Professor of History and Director of the Schwalb Center, was passionate about this region and was one of the top experts on Moroccan history. Paying homage to his area of study, the public is invited to two keynote events at 12:30 P.M. and 7 P.M. Dr. Wilfrid Rollman will present the afternoon keynote at 12:30 P.M. on “North African Soldiers in French Service, 1914-1945: Recognizing and Reappraising the Work of Moshe Gershovich.” The evening keynote at 7 P.M. is entitled “” with Dr. William Lawrence. Dr. Rollman is a Senior Lecturer at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and a Visiting Professor at Harvard University and is currently completing the translation and critical study of an Arabic memoir on nineteenth and early 20th century Morocco. Dr. Lawrence is currently a Visiting Professor at the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University. He was a former State Department Senior Advisor for Global Engagement, International Crisis Group North Africa Director, and Control Risks Associate Director for Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Drs. Lawrence and Rollman were colleagues with Moshe Gershovich and will speak to his legacy.

Description : During this in-depth lecture, author and scholar Rabbi Kronish will discuss the complex political, religious and historical issues Israel faces today. A seasoned dialogue partner with Muslims and Christians, Dr. Kronish will share his experience. Refugees, Theatre and Cinema
Description : UNO and community members are invited to view the moving and informative documentary “This Is Home: A Refugee Story,” which follows four Syrian refugee families as they navigate a new life in Baltimore, MD during the first 8 months after resettlement. After the film, there will be a brief panel discussion with Lacey Studnicka of Lutheran Family Services and two Central High School students whose families were resettled in Omaha as refugees from Syria. Food will be provided. This event is sponsored by Lutheran Family Services, Omaha Public Schools, Central High School, Goldstein Family Community Chair in Human Rights, and the UNO Department of Religious Studies.

Description : South Cowichan Seniors (SCS) is comprised of a group dedicated volunteers committed to improving the lives of seniors in the South Cowichan area. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCS program provided the elderly with social support and an opportunity to build meaningful relationships. A healthy luncheon was provided by SCS in the Cobble Hill Hall on the second and fourth Mondays of each month to approximately 200 participants from 20 staff. Subsequent to the pandemic social gatherings were restricted, the SCS group provides meals via a takeout service. COVID-19 has decreased the number of meaningful interactions seniors are able to participate in, reduced social interactions as participants are no longer able to dine together. An understanding of the social networks of seniors, stress throughout the pandemic and social isolation all warrant attention and action. It is therefore important to understand this populations needs, effects of COVID-19 on seniors’ mental health as well as innovative ways to increase social connectedness. A quantitative survey of seniors participating in the luncheon program will be conducted to garner an understanding of the impact of the luncheon program on stress during the pandemic as well as senior’s mental health and wellness throughout the pandemic.

Description : In this research, Xiaoming Yang and others examine the roles of four dimensions of risk (performance, financial, social, and emotional) in decisions to switch from a pioneer product to a follower product. The authors hypothesize that the emotional risk of switching is positively related to the perceived levels of performance, financial, and social risks of switching.

Description : In this research, Xiaoming Yang and others hypothesize that the generation of positive and negative word-of-mouth is positively related to three social motivations (social comparison, sharing social information, and social bonding). The authors also examine the relationship between WOM generation and one consequence, reflected self-image.

Description : The mass entrepreneurship policy has introduced a new era of sustainable development in China. Yet, the policy alone does not describe how individuals and organizations might pursue this new approach to economic expansion. In this paper, Xiaoming Yang and his co-author suggest that under this new policy, partnerships between social ventures and donors, beneficiaries, and government agencies serve as a vehicle to co-create value for sustainable development.
