Description : UNO Students from Kersten Borer SOWK 1500-001 course: Social Work and Civic Engagement work on a service-learning project. This project will build on the success of the “Portions” cookbook project that collected recipes from community members accessing the food pantry and turned them into a community cookbook by, and for, our community members. Now that we have this resource, we want to use it to educate the wider community about the various causes and consequences of hunger in Omaha, focusing specifically on the ways that food insecurity impacts and is influenced by the reality of our community residents everyday lives. Students determine what kind of information they need from the community and how to get that information, collect stories from community members accessing the food pantry at Together, and create a cookbook with recipes and stories around the way food brings us together.

Description : The Community Cookbook was planned to look different this year as a result of COVID. It was a continuation from the Fall 2020 project. In addition to this shift, the goal was to explore expanding the breadth of this project by reaching a broader audience, working closely with interdisciplinary community partners, and incorporating a broader discussion of food justice. Together brought in Nebraska Writers Collective to help with the poetry and story-telling aspect of the cookbook. UNO students collected and provided some of their own recipes for the cookbook and added poems and stories about recipes. Omaha South High School Art students provided the digital artwork for the cookbook. The cookbook was also translated into Spanish by World Speaks and is currently being formatted to send for printing. The Podcast project involved creating eight podcasts which were then combined to six episodes which will be shared with the Community. The podcasts involved interviews with community members on their perceptions of and importance of food. Students had the opportunity to interact with community members (via zoom) and build content that will be shared across the community. This project introduced the students to both micro and macro social work. Students engaged with community members identified by Together. They gathered information, and knowledge through individuals’ stories. The podcasts created which will be used to bring about awareness of the importance of food security. Students also create podcasts about food which can be found here. https://mavradio.libsyn.com/portions. SOWK 1500-820 P-16 Project
