Description : UNO Social Work 8220 students will work with members of the Circle of Friends group from Omaha Northwest High Magnet School. UNO students will develop active listening and rapport-building skills while helping Circle of Friends members create personal goals with objectives, learn new skills, and adapt in social situations. The goal is to allow graduate social work students to learn clinical skills and Circle of Friends members to learn skills to utilize during and after high school.

Description : Students will produce several administrative and media projects related to community-based mental health. They will also learn basic intervention, assessment, and social support skills in relation to persons with a severe and persistent mental illness. At the end of the semester, students will present research findings and products to the ACT team.

Description : Graduate students from UNO Instructor Tami Williams’ Educational Leadership course partnered with Ms. Danielle Elsassr’s 3rd grade students from Black Elk Elementary and Royale Oaks Assisted Living Center. This project allowed the elementary students to foster intergenerational relationships between themselves and their senior buddies through their creation of poetry and art. UNO students benefited by the gained experience of supervising a community partnership and learning about the importance of engaging their future students with opportunities outside the classroom.

Description : UNO students in Dr. Mitzi Ritzman’s Early Language Development course (SPED 4420) made home visits with LCC Navigators to families that the Learning Community Center of South Omaha (LCC) serves. Students came uo work with small children, with a fop with individualized interaction plans tcus on language and literacy, and shared the information and resources with the families. LCC’s educational navigators worked closely with UNO students on home visits. The UNO students were able to apply their knowledge and skills they learned in the class about developmental milestones and literacy with language components. They shared their home visit experiences at the final celebration.
